soldered poppies
I have long wanted to learn how to solder and so when I was planning my stamp retreatfor this year, I decided to have this as one of the optional classes offered. When it didn't work out to have someone come and teach who knew what they were doing, I started learning all about it so that I could teach it myself. I found out that my Dad actually had the tools I needed from a stained glass class he took and then at CHA in July I got a lesson from Cindy Lyles(aka Starlitstudio). To practice before the class I soldered everyone's name tag for the retreat - 22! - and also made a few fun pieces like this one!
The poppy image is from Lisa's new Rememberset that was released in August. I used my Twinkling H2O's for the base images of the flowers and then black ink for the outline images. To learn more about using Twinkling H2O's see my post here.
I have been thinking about gifts whenever I am creating and so I stamped multiple images right away. That way I have little gifts right on hand and don't have to spend the extra time pulling out the supplies to make more.
The glass piece that I used for the project is 2" square and to figure out how my image will fit into my ornament I just traced around the glass when I had the image framed where I wanted it.
After sandwiching the image between the 2 glass pieces, I wrapped the edge with copper tape. If you don't want to solder, you could stop here. I have made magnets this way before and they also make great little gifts. This time though I took it a step further and soldered the edges, added jump rings, and a little bead dangle.
I am working on a step by step tutorial on basic soldering to share from the class I taught at the retreat. Ellen, Mish, Debbie, and Cindy are all great resources for you to check out if you want to learn more about soldering right now.
If you haven't already, go check out the sweet giftthat Mish made me for my birthday. I love it and it made me cry - my first stamp set release will always be such a special memory for me and she captured it in such a perfect way.
And speaking of releases, I have another stamp set being released this month...! Nichole has a little sneak peek on her blog today - so go check it out! I will start posting some sneak peek projects with my set on Wednesday of this week.

Pine, I almost wish you were less creative! I am now quite sure that I NEED a soldering kit so that I can make this! It's amazing and I'm thrilled that you gave such awesome tips for it. I'm going to order my kit today and then patiently wait for you to write the step by step soldering tutorial :D
You were the Runner Up Tutorial of the Week at Card of the Week.com. You can see the original post here: http://www.cardoftheweek.com/2008/09/crafting-101--1.html.

These are beautiful! Love the idea of using Twinks for the base--will have to dig mine out and give this a try.
I'm so glad you liked Mish's gift--it was clear it was made with love from one special lady to another!
