traveler's journal - swatches & organization
August 08, 2018
Welcome to this month's Traveler's Journal feature! Today it's all about organization and using your Traveler's Journals to help you do that. I did some browsing on the internet and found some great inspiration:
{fabric swatch book - source unknown}
This fabric swatch book is quite old and hold different fabrics. You could keep track of sewing and quilting projects in this way and add a swatch of the fabric that you used. I actually have an old notebook that I kept swatches of fabric in my collection for quilting years ago along with notes and pattern ideas.
{yarn swatch book - coco knits}
I am a knitter and was very much drawn to this little notebook of knitted swatches. This person used it to keep track of colors of yarn that were hand dyed. I love this idea for keeping track of yarn used on projects or even just to keep track of yarn in your stash!

And, of course, you could keep track of watercolor swatches. I love the tiny strip of swatch dots along the one side of the page.
If you read my last Design Team Tips post, you saw my large watercolor swatch sheets that I shared, but I also thought it would be great to downsize those swatches to fit into a Traveler's Journal. Think about how portable your swatches become when you do them in a format like this!
I used the new passport size of the Traveler's Journal to create my swatch book. The outside cover is a simple design with just a title label that I made with a die included in the Traveler's Journal: Accessories die collection. I typed up the "swatches" word on my typewriter, die cut it out, attached eyelets in each end, and attached it to my cover.
On the inside page, I added a pocket that I cut with the Traveler's Journal: Accessories die so I can tuck any loose swatches or pieces into. Then I added a title to the next page using a Pierced Feature Frames die. I watercolored a rainbow of colors with inks and then typed a title over the top when it was dry.
The swatch cards are 3" x 4" and fit perfectly onto the passport size pages. I printed them out into watercolor paper. The cards will also work in the original Traveler's Journal size as well. If you do pocket scrapbooking, this size will work well in those pages too!
At the top of the page, I used the circle die cut from the Traveler's Journal: Accessories die collection to label the page colors. I typed up the words up on my typewriter onto some kraft cardstock and then die cut them out and attached them to the top of the pages with a tiny attacher stapler.
This spread includes the reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, and some of the greens in the Papertrey Ink spectrum.
This next spread includes the rest of the greens, blues, purples, and some neutrals in the Papertrey Ink spectrum.
This last spread includes the rest of the neutrals in the Papertrey Ink spectrum.
Papertrey Ink has 53 dye ink colors. I created a chart that you can download, print, and then add your swatches to. There are 3 charts with no color labels on them on the second file that you can fill with other colors that you might have in your collection.
Click the links to download the 3"x4" swatch cards that you can add to your own Traveler's Journal. The files are laid out as shown above and the charts are BLANK so that you can add your own swatches to it.
You can also use the charts to stamp ink color swatches onto or add a swatch of cardstock to - don't just think you have to use these for watercolor samples.
